Resource management system reform

Two key pieces of legislation for resource management reform are now in place.
The Natural and Built Environment Act and the Spatial Planning Act will be phased in over the coming years.

A small number of changes apply from August 24, 2023. Many parts of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) are still in force for now.

Simplicity’s build-to-rent programme ramps up with racecourse land purchase

More than 300 affordable build-to-rent homes will be going into Remuera as Simplicity Living expands into the prestige suburb.

The home building company owned by non-profit KiwiSaver provider Simplicity has purchased 1.4 hectares of land from Ellerslie Racecourse for one of its next development projects.

It planned to build 330 new rental homes on the site, which was close to Greenlane train station, a supermarket, shops and offices, and the medical hub around the Mercy Ascot hospital.

Simplicity managing director Sam Stubbs said the development was part of its wider building programme, which also gave KiwiSaver investors the chance to invest in New Zealand infrastructure.

Wellington’s Shelly Bay development scrapped, land sold to Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh

A controversial housing development at Wellington’s Shelly Bay will no longer go ahead and the land there has been sold to famous filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson and his partner Dame Fran Walsh.

The shock announcement was made in a joint statement from the parties involved this afternoon.

Shelly Bay Taikuru Limited and The Wellington Company announced today that they will not be going ahead with the planned development, saying the decision was “carefully considered”.

The Wellington Company was behind the $500 million development, which was to feature 350 new homes and has divided local iwi.
