The Kāinga Ora turnaround plan refocusing the agency on its role of building and maintaining government owned social housing was announced in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) today by Housing Minister Hon Chris Bishop, Simon Moutter, Chair Kāinga Ora and Matt Crockett, Chief Executive, Kāinga Ora.

The turnaround plan follows on from the independent review delivered last year by Sir Bill English.

There are five components to the Plan:

  • Kāinga Ora to be refocused on its core mission: building, maintaining and managing quality social housing, and being a supportive, but firm landlord.
  • Improved organisational performance: a focus on cost effectiveness – reducing high overheads and leveraging buying power more effectively.
  • Improved tenant and community management.
  • Improved housing portfolio and build management – better managing the existing Kāinga Ora assets and building or renewing homes as efficiently as the market, including simplifying social housing building specifications and using all available building delivery channels.
  • A more persistent and sustainable approach to funding and associated settings.

SkyCity reveals another big NZ International Convention Centre delay, blames Fletcher Construction

SkyCity Entertainment Group won’t open the New Zealand International Convention Centre for another year, citing delays by head contractor Fletcher Construction but Fletcher Building said today there had been no change to its timeline.

In an NZX announcement today, SkyCity said it would be next February before the centre, between Hobson St and Nelson St in Auckland’s CBD, would open.

But Fletcher said there had been no change to its completion date and it still intended that to be by June this year.

A SkyCity spokesman indicated February was better timing rather than later this year.

Asked why February, he said it was a “contingency plus the convention market effectively closes in December and January. This allows time for commissioning.”

KiwiSaver provider Simplicity to build 264 homes in build-to-rent development in Morningside

Auckland’s Morningside is set to gain a large new build-to-rent development in the heart of the suburb, as Simplicity Living confirmed it had secured resource consent to get the project under way.

Comprised of 264 homes for long-term rent, the development will cost at its peak roughly $175 million and employ over 400 people on- and off-site.

Managing director of Simplicity Living, Shane Brealey, said Simplicity was on a mission to provide thousands of high-quality homes across New Zealand.

“Our unique combination of vertically integrated planning, construction, finance, ownership and management allows us to build better, faster and at lower cost,” Brealey said.

“And being funded via Simplicity KiwiSaver and Investment Funds means we can build through the economic cycle, employing quality tradespeople over the long term.”
